#VBGIVESBACK: Rachel Platten
“This is my fight song-Take back my life song-Prove I'm alright song-My power's turned on…”
Did you always want to be a professional singer? No, not until I got to college was I brave enough to try to go for it.
How did you first get your start?I sang with a friend’s band in Trinidad (as a backup singer) to 80,000 people at the International Soca Monarch Finals. From that moment on I was hooked.
Did you know Fight Song and Stand By You would become inspirational anthems for so, so many?I hoped they would reach people but no, not in my wildest dreams did I think it would be THIS many people.
What is Musicians On Call? It's an amazing charity that sends musicians to play and sing bedside for patients in the hospital. I've had the pleasure of working with them and delivering the healing power of music through MOC for 13 years.
What made you want to be involved with this organization?Their incredible mission, to spread healing and love through my passion, music! Also, I wanted to find an outlet for making music that was purely about giving.
How often do you volunteer your time with them?As often as I can! I used to get to do sessions monthly, but now I go whenever I can on tour and visit patients. It fills me up with love and reminds me what I'm doing here.
Can you share with us a memorable moment you have had while singing in these hospitals? There are so many; recently I was told a young girl who had terminal cancer and wasn't expected to live through the month had smiled and spoken for the first time in weeks after I visited. That was pretty incredible.
What are you most grateful for in your own life??That all of my dreams have come true, that my family is healthy and happy, that I get to spread love and empowerment through music, that I have an incredible team around me, that my dog likes me more than my husband. Shhhhh.
You have helped give so many their inspirational song, what is your theme song?Well....Fight Song of course. Wait is that allowed? ;)
What is your guilty pleasure?Bad, bad reality TV and eating food off of my band mates’ plates.
