Movers & Shakers: Isca Greenfield-Sanders

April 27, 2015

There is art that you admire, and then there is art that really speaks to you. Isca Greenfield-Sander’s large scale oil paintings and watercolors, based on found transparencies (slides) from the 1950’s and 1960’s, do just that. Her work is so captivating that you just can’t turn away. Each piece has a haunting sense of nostalgia and you long to know the story behind it. Who were those kids? Where are they now? The images are familiar- it could have been you long ago or your kids today.
Her art brings up emotions and reminds us all- seize the moment, live it now, remember this time for it will all be gone too soon. Isca not only a talent beyond belief, but a friend and an inspiration.

WHICH WORDS DEFINE YOUR STYLE?

I would define my daily style as utilitarian, but flattering. As a painter, I get messy at studio so I don’t wear anything too nice. However, before each of my shows I treat myself to a dress to wear to the opening, that’s my move. So I have a nice dress collection.

WHAT/WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST?

I draw great inspiration from my family which is filled with artists. In addition to being married to a painter and musician (Sebastian Blanck) my sister is a writer and director (Liliana Greenfield-Sanders) my father is a photographer and a film maker (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders) my uncle is a steel sculptor (John Sanders) my grandfather is an abstract expressionist painter (Joop Sanders) my maternal grandmott her is a Leider singer (Isca Sanders) and my paternal grandmother is a concert pianist (Ruth Greenfield.) Thankfully for all of us, my mother had the good sense to become a lawyer.

WHAT IS ONE PERSONAL ACTIVITY OR TIME EACH WEEK THAT YOU DON’T MESS WITH?

Each night I crawl in bed and check Pinterest for at least 10 minutes of Scandinavian home interiors porn. I just love it.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF WHEN IT COMES TO STYLE OR YOUR CAREER?

Learn what looks good on your body. Invest in basics first, they are the building blocks. Shop when you travel, and buy fun little things to wear seasonally.

WHAT IS THE BEST STYLE ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

Uniforms can be stylish, wearing the same thing every day can be fashionable. Hearing this was eye opening, now when I find an item I really like I buy four.

WHAT IS THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

Art is a long game, dare to persevere as time changes everything.

WHAT IS YOUR UNIFORM?

I wear black jeans, a black tee, and black ankle highs pretty much every day. Growing up everyone called my parents Morticia and Gomez Adams as they were NEVER seen out of black, with no exception to this day. I am not that strict, but it is certainly my default.

What is more fun is selecting outfits for events — I seem to be able to step a little outside my comfort zone for these special nights (go figure?!) The Veronica Beard White Eyelash Lace Dress is the perfect dress for opening night of a solo gallery show.

THE ONE THING YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT…

I have two sons (5 and 7) and they make my world turn. I am also quite fond of their father. Sorry, I believe that is 3 “things.”

TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU.

I am crazy organized, but secretly I feel my efficiency could be improved.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET WEAPON?

Earl Grey tea with A LOT OF HEAVY CREAM. And water.
